2020 PINOT NOIR - KAHAR VINEYARD - PETALUMA GAP
The Kahar vineyard lies on 144 acres in the rolling hills that separate Petaluma and Cotati. There are 35 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted in the Petaluma Gap sub-region of the Sonoma Coast. The site is one of the best places in the area to experience the beauty of the Petaluma Gap. The vineyard faces west, and on a clear day, one can see 20 miles out to the marine layer blanketing Bodega Bay. The unique location funnels cool, moist air in from the Pacific Ocean along the low-lying areas to San Pablo Bay.
The morning fog limits the amount of sunlight, which delays sugar accumulation and helps retain natural acidity. In the afternoon, the winds pick up, and the vines begin to close their stomata on the undersides of leaves. This is essentially shutting down transpiration (also limiting sugar accumulation) until the wind speed slows down. These conditions allow us to harvest the grapes with mature flavors and aromas at lower sugar levels.

VINTAGE NOTES : Napa Valley’s 2021 vintage was so great; you could just feel the excitement all over the valley. The year started off gently with sunny skies and a warm spring, followed by continued drought. In parts of the valley, the crop was down by 20-60 percent. But the small crop had a silver lining. While the crop was down, the concentration was through the roof. The berries were tiny and packed with color, tannin, and flavor. But, with the memory of the difficult 2020 vintage still fresh in their minds, vintners were holding their breaths. As the valley inched closer and closer to the harvest, everyone was on pins and needles. Nature was kind. The valley drifted into a gentle, cool, beautiful fall. The weather was sensational. The grapes were in perfect condition. The mood all over the valley was joyous.
TASTING NOTES: Fruit on the nose is extroverted, a dollop of blueberry and huckleberry. Juicy and fresh with supple, finely grained tannins. Sandalwood and fig meld with mocha and blackberry. Finish is long and pleasant with heather and sweet tobacco.
